Glenn Jones

As a friend put it this past weekend, John Fahey is a gateway to other great music. After being blown away by his guitar playing, I went searching for other, and newer musicians that treat the guitar the same way he did. Among the current crop of instrumental guitarists (and there are several great ones that we'll get to eventually), one my favorites thus far has got to be Glenn Jones. Jones is a founding member of instrumental rock band Cul de Sac, and within the past few years has released a few solo acoustic albums that are amazing. 2007's Against Which The Sea Continually Beats, is one of my favorite albums of the past few months. I strongly urge anyone remotely interested in this kind of music to check it out.

Spiritual Jazz

One of the cooler albums I've picked up recently is the Spiritual Jazz comp on Jazzman Records. It ranges from Coltrane-esque modal to some raging funk/jazz. Here's what the label has to say about the album:

"Existing completely under the critical radar and largely ignored or unknown by music fans and critics alike, most of the musicians featured in this album won’t be familiar to even the most seasoned jazz aficionado. But in this era of musical apathy, where so many music junkies look to the past for their musical fix, we have re-discovered hidden, obscure and esoteric jazz musicians who looked to the four corners of the earth - and beyond - for inspiration. Here we evaluate Spiritual Jazz – music that is a snapshot of the era after Coltrane, a time which saw the evolution of an underground jazz that spoke about the reform of the soul, the reform of the spirit, and the reform of society: a music which was local and international at once, which was a personal journey and a political statement, and which was religious and secular in one non-contradictory breath. Soul Jazz - Black Jazz - Spiritual Jazz."

Here's the last track from the albu
m. I highly recommend it:

One Foot In The Grave

Here's another version of Rev. Clayborn's Let Jesus Lead You, this time titled He's a Mighty Good Leader. It's the leadoff track to Beck's One foot In The Grave, and its the best thing he ever did.

Calexico

I miss the old calexico. As cool as the newer stuff has been, i really enjoyed the heavy mariachi doses. Here's a nice accordion-led instrumental from the 1997 album Spoke.

Reverend Edward W. Clayborn

While not as well known as Blind Willie Johnson, Rev. Edward W. Clayborn was another big name amongst the Guitar Evangelists who recorded extensively in the late '20s and '30s. Clayborn was yet another master of the slide guitar, and here, you can hear it for yourself:

Blind Willie Johnson

Blind Willie Johnson was the guitar evangelist. He had one foot planted in the blues, and the other foot firmly planted in spiritual music, and he wasn't alone. There have been many blues singing preachers, and a lot of them are collected nicely for us on this here compilation that i just picked up. I'm not much of a fan of evangelists in general, but there's something about this music that makes the message that much easier to go down smoothly. As we dive headfirst into this music, we'll share more of it.
